Jesse Smith & WJ Castle

This family-owned butcher’s business has had a presence in Cirencester since 1808. Today, the business has a number of shops throughout the Cotswolds with the flagship store in Cirencester becoming a go-to food destination for all things local…

A proud heritage

The original shop on Black Jack Street in Cirencester is now a grade II listed building, celebrating the lovely Edwardian shopfront and interior. Inside, you can see the beautifully preserved tiles that celebrate the pig and what a butcher can do with it. It still operates as a butcher’s shop.

This fantastic nod to the past is in direct contrast to the thriving and modern farm shop which you can find in Love Lane, Cirencester, selling a range of local products in store.

A commitment to provenance

The Jesse Smith reputation has been built on an uncompromising commitment to provenance, fair trade with farmers and sourcing the finest quality produce.

From humble beginnings, with just a handful of devoted customers, the business now collaborates with many of the best local chefs and restaurateurs, who choose to use Jesse Smith meat and products on their menus.

It's all about the product

From an outstanding rib of beef to your favourite hung sirloin on the bone, Jesse Smith butchers have scoured the very best to bring you products which are bursting with flavour.

In the shops you will find experienced butchers on hand to offer advice about exciting new products, from succulent old spot pork to exceptionally tender new-season lamb, with a beautifully sweet and subtle flavour.

More than just a butcher's shop

Although there are six generations of butchers at Jesse Smith, the shops have evolved to become local food and drink hubs in the area.

As well as choice cuts of locally-sourced meat, you can find home-made condiments, local and award-winning cheeses, bread, cakes and pastries from local bakeries.

In the freezer section you can pick up delicious meals for supper – pies (try the Beef & Guinness!), jumbo sausage rolls, pasties and meals such as lasagne and cottage pie, all hand-made by Jesse Smith catering staff.

Enjoy a taste of local

As well as a thriving shop, deli and butchery, the Jesse Smith Farmshop in Love Lane, Cirencester, offers a café and restaurant, serving teas and coffees, cakes and pastries and light bites.

There is also the chance to sample new products at tasting events – keep an eye on the website for details.
